Frequently Asked Questions

What is the FFA?
The FFA is a leadership organization just for agriculture students. If you've heard that FFA is all cows and plows or just for farmers, you got the wrong information.  FFA is much more than that!

How can I become an FFA member?
Only students enrolled in an agriculture course may become an FFA member.

Do all Agriculture students become FFA members?
Yes, FFA membership and participation is expected.

What courses can I take?
We are offering the following courses for the the 2006-2007 school year:
Ag Mechanics I
Ag Mechanics II
Ag Mechanics III
Animal production and Management
Basic Ag Science
Forestry
Forestry II
Natural Resources Management
Plant Science Biotechnology

Are agriculture classes hard?
Agriculture courses are planned to be both challenging and demanding. Expectations are high for all students enrolled in an agriculture course.  Lazy students should consider easier, less demanding courses.

Since I am in the college preparatory program, won't that limit my opportunities in FFA?
No, not at all! We have honor students graduate each year who were on the college preparatory program of study and were enrolled in an agriculture course every semester they were in high school.  With a little planning every student can have an agriculture class each semester.

What about leadership skills?
No one does this better than the FFA.  All students receive instuction in public speaking and parliamentary procedure.  Members work together on multitude of activities throughout the year.  There are numerous opportunities to learn; from advanced skills like extemporaneous speaking to simple life skills like tying a necktie.  Students also have the opportunity to serve as, Chapter, Area, and State FFA Officers.

What kind of competitive activites are availible?
Our FFA Chapter has established a tremendous record in competitive activities by winning state, national, and even international levels of competition.  Prepared public speaking, forestry, land judging, floral design, dairy judging, and environmental/natural resources are just a sample of the areas in which we compete.

I've heard that all FFA members must complete a Supervised Agricultural Experience Program(SAEP).  What is that?
Each FFA member is required to plan and conduct a series of learning activities to be conducted outside of the classroom.  Students select their own project for this learning by doing activity.  Students must spend a minimum of 18 hours per semester on their SAEP.

Since I don't like cows, is there anything else I can do in FFA?
Absolutely!  FFA is more than cows.  We have students involved in a wide range of activities.  Students have SAEPs in areas like floral design, wildlife management, agricultural mechanics, landscape design and maintenance, and agricultural communications.

Is work all their is in FFA?
Work is important, but there are many recreational activities too.  We have activities planned throughout the year.  There are FFA meetings each month.  We have dances, cookouts, swimming parties, and car washes, as well as FFA Camp for a week each summer.

Are there any other reasons I should consider becoming an FFA member?
All students have a need to "belong."  Our students feel a special bond of closeness; they work together and play together.  Many say that being an FFA member feels like being part of a big family.
