Genetic Update
PC-FFA Rubens Mandy
Our Story The Putnam County FFA Chapter implanted our
first embryo in December 1993. Chapter members care for heifers
resulting from our breeding program in our school livestock
facility. Lactating cows are housed at local dairies. The
embryo was a gift from H. R. Bennett, DVM, a member of the syndicate
that owned the great show cow Pappys Hurricane. The embryo, sired
by Townson Lindy, became our foundation female. "Baby Cane" as we
affectionately called her went on to become a tremendous show heifer
and an excellent cow. Flushed numerous times, Baby Cane always
made a lot more bulls than heifers. We sold several choices and
one outstanding heifer. We kept an Encore heifer that showed
great promise, but unfortunately we lost her after calving in the
second time. We have an Astre embryo left that is the only chance
we have to continue this family. Perhaps in retrospect we should
have saved another heifer.
![]() S-Robins-Nest Hurricane ET Current Genetics Mandy (by Rubens) is a product of the Maggie family. Maggie was a KED Juror out of an excellent Rotate. Maggie came to us as an embryo from Danny Copelan and Bill Slade. Maggie never flushed well, but along with Mandy she had a couple of outstanding females. We've sold a couple of good ones (by Rudolph and Lee) from this family. In addition to Mandy, Encore from this family won the 2005 Georgia Holstein Futurity bringing back-to-back titles to members of the Putnam County FFA Chapter! We also have Misty, a really nice Durham heifer from this family. She is due in December 2006 to Talent. Ray Ward of Water Oak Holsteins sent us an excellent Hanoverhill Victor that we flushed twice. We have Champion and Emory embryos out of this cow. We are expecting our first calves out of her in March 2007. We are excited about the coming year. For the 2006-07 school year we've got calves coming by Durham, Talent, Champion, and Emory. We also want to thank Southern Manor Embryo Service for all of their help with our cows. Edited 6-12-2006 |
